I just picked up a 1999 flhp. I have a question to any one out there.
The "engine" light comes on while i'm going down the road. When i stop it will turn off and then come back on and then off agian when i start to go again.
What's the deal? Do I have a Oil problem or is something going on with the computer. I really want to keep the scooter, my Dad gave it to me use because he figured i could use for my job. If i have to spend a lot to fix it i may as well give it back and have him get some money out of it. My Yamahawg has 53k on it and never messes up. This flhp has only twenty five hundred miles on it. Any help would be appreciated.

Is it the engine light or the oil pressure light? The oil pressure light on my 05 RKC flickers on and off sometimes. Had it to a couple of dealers and they could not find the problem. I put a oil pressure gauge on it to be safe. Hope it is nothing serious. Have Fun and RIDE SAFE

It's the engine light. The oil light goes off as soon as I start it and never has it flickered. I checked that first because no oil in a running engine is mucho bad. I have been looking at a "scanalyzer" the cheapest I've found is $210.00 and it comes with software to see what is going on with the bike. It's going to have to wait for a little bit though, still catching up after my vacation. Meanwhile I'll ride the vstar (dependable) untill i figure it out. Some one mentioned pulling the crankcase position sensor and cleaning it because it gathers debree on the end. It's worth a try, Hawg gone I see rain in the forecast.

Disregard the scanalyzer. Sounds like you've got a 'resident code'. There is a way to clear that, but I don't remember.

I was getting one on my Ultra, I discovered that the spark plug leads had worked themselves into a loosened condition, and it would set a code.

So, first, start checking all the leads related to ignition, and with that low mileage, you might be finding some corrosion, even under a good looking connection.

Second, make sure the battery is absolutely good.
Good luck, and let us know what comes up.

We were getting the flicker on the 98 RK. Put a pressure guage on it, and it reads great. No worries!!!

Ride Slow2004,
The oil pressure is fine. The oil pressure light flicker made me concerned. The oil light flickers more when I ride in the rain, so I think the sending unit had to be grounding out. I replaced the sending unit and the oil light still flickered. The oil pressure gauge is the only way to go. I can work on the old scoots, but these new elecronic scoots make me pull my hair out. When the dealers can't find the problem, I do not feel so bad. Have Fun and RIDE SAFE

You aint kiddin' when it comes to these new scoots, man, if it weren't for a lap top and a scanalyzer I wouldn't know where to start. I had a thought the other day, (don't laugh, and yes just a little thought). The Stealer wants both arms now a days for any work they do. Well back to my thought. I brought the scoot from Arizona. Could i be an altitude thing?...... So I thought (yes it did hurt my head) what if i just unplug the battery so it can reset the brain for a little bit. You know what...? It worked no more "engine" light. But now I have two fuel hoses leaking.... I decided since one was leaking and I was replacing the rubber o rings any way why not replace both... There I go again thinking PM (preventative maintenance). Well apparently when you take these hoses off to put the little o ring on you mess up the inaccessable one inside the hose. So now i did all that work and have a worse leak. The stealers wants 180.00 each for the hoses which are the some ol' blah looking ones. I found a set of better looking ones on the net for 133.00 and they're braided stainless and chrome. So now i'm going to either rig something or save some dukies for some new hardware. Either way i'm fixin' it. Well enough that's it for now i got tah get back to work... Hawg out.... Later ya'all ride safety smart.

I'll give you my 2c on the H-D light thingamajiggy....on my scoot....when I start it...I havta wait untill that lil' yellow " check engine" thingy goes out..before I can actually thumb the starter...if I try to start my scoot before my bike goes thru' that internal computer check....it will start...but weird things happen...for one...my tachometer will read about 1,000 rpms higher than it should....my low fuel light will come on ...at about 1/2 tank full....and my turn signals won't stop blinking after I turn them on...I havta manually switch them off..
sooo...I've learned me lesson...PATIENCE....I gotta wait that 15-20 seconds for the bike to self check itself...and then everything works 'jes fine...
