I crashed and burned a long time ago and i had a 3/4 and a long bill shade on my lid. I ended up sliding on my chest backwards and that was when the bill caught the ground and pulled my face up just enough for the ground to open a 2 in gash in my chin. I had tennis shoes on and they being made of moslty nylon, melted into the tops of my toes.
All my other crashes i've been lucky enough to roll baby roll and come up standing. By the way is a non moving drop of the bike considered a crash?... I no longer wear tennis shoes when i ride, only steel toe boots for me. Well i've said enough later ya'all i gotta take a 75 mile round trip to work in this 100 degree heat and humidity..... hawg gone...ya'all...

It's a very good and serious question. On the spectrum between no helmet at all to full face/max protection, I have ended up at 3/4 with what I think is the best 3/4 helemt avaialble...the Shoei RJ Platinum R.
I originally purchased a Shoei multitec flip helmet, but I learned that my tolerance for the closed face mode was no longer acceptable. I just felt like I had a box on my head and got out my old Bell Super Magnum helmet from the late 70's...it was hemmoraging bits of foam...but lasted long enough for me to try on different 3/4 new helmets.
I would never ride wih no helmet...it just seems dumb to me. I have seen too many bad crashes over the last 35 years that were not the fault of the rider and I think it's a shame for anybody to be killed or suffer brain damage by not wearing any helmet at all. In my case, I also just feel like that's unfair to family and people who depend on me. I worry sometmes when I have a close call for any reason...I have this image of my chin hitting something solid, but if I had to wear a full time Flip or straight full coverage, I think I would end up not ridng. This is the level of safety/risk/protection I have landed at. But I do think about it quite a bit...more than I would like.
