I have an '04 Heritage...bike runs like a champ...but is a b***tch to start. Seems like the bendix does not want to engage properly...you can just hear it whine...it takes several attempts to get it to engage properly.
Even when it does engage...the starter can barely turn over the motor....which has been cranked up to 95 inches plus high compression pistons.
New H-D starter promises 15% more power.....might just be enuff to get mah bike started...
Anyway....I'm trying to save the installation costs...would like to get an opinion from the many experienced wrenches here.
Thanks

OK, so the experienced wrenches are off riding. I would only say that if you are going to do this one yourself, you will need a good digital camera to record the take apart, and a manual, for the torque settings on the screws and bolts, and a couple of torque wrenches. Why more than one? Many of the H D settings are in inch lbs., and my main wrench doesn't go that low.

I have since talked to a H-D wrench of mine...he sez....I gotta undo more than just the starter....I gotta undo the oil tank..primary cover....etc...and he sez it might not even be the starter...but the starter "clutch "....

Soooo...bein' that I 'm gonna bring it in for the 10K service...I guess I'm gonna havta spring for some extra work....

Sounds like all the wrong kind of fun, oh well, at least it is during the 'WINTER', you be freezing in the 60 degree chill. I see ya putting on your heated gear, firing up the BMW, hitting the switch for the heated leather seats, clicking the radar detector into its mount, and just suffering on your drive in.

Well...it finally happened....arranged for my bike to be serviced ...and the starter checked out....and would'nt you know it...could'nt get my bike started.
Sounded like a bunch of marbles being chewed up in a washing machine...so must surmiss that the starter has died a horrible death....so now must arrange for bike to be trailered to the dealership...always a pain in the rear end...
