I agree with those guys,
You want something midsize. I'm guessing that you already have what you have, since these messages were posted in August.
But ya, don't get a beater. If it has any major problems you will have a paperweight that you can't get rid of. You can get a pretty good bike for 2 to 3 grand. Those 750 Honda Shadows get 60 mpg and are good for getting experience. Ride whatever you get for a year. Ride often, rack up those miles.Always wear a helmet, jacket, boots, gloves and some sort of riding pants. Chaps (pronounced Shapps) are ok 'cept they don't cover your butt. Half helmets look cool but statics indicate in about 60percent of accidents a person lands in the cheek area. Thats why I wear a full face helmet, I like my face the way it is. Well, more or less...
But do your homework. Don't get hung up on one brand cuz that's what your buddy's ride. Check the insurance rates of the bikes you like.
Talk to as many owners as you can, then make your decision.
Take your time, do your research. You will be glad you did.

If you feel confident and comfortable with the 1200, go for it!
Everybody has different likes and dislikes. Follow the crowed as far as asking questions, gathering information and experience, in the end you should make your own choice. I just happen to be lucky that I don't want a bigger or "better" bike. I'm happy with the 650 Classic.
I also know one can spend a fortune on accessories for a bike. I don't do that.
One time I dropped the 650, a real stupid move on my part. I was backing up, walking the bike slowly, wheels cut max to the right, my rear wheel hit the lip of an asphalt driveway, and down I came like a rock. The left handgrip weight was a little scratched up. I was more embarrassed and mad than hurt. I was too cheap to replace the scratched grip weight. I went to Home Depot and bought a pair of black rubber crutch tips for about $2.00. They fit perfectly. Later, some guy,a stranger, asked me where I got those grip ends. I told him I got them at the HD dealer, he asked how much they cost, I said $58 and change. He said, I want a pair! I had to level with him, I didn't think he would believe me. My point is you can "customize" a bike one of two ways, the expensive way or the cheap way.

Good post except they are pronounced CHAPS...If you went somewhere and asked for shapps (which may be technically correct-but I ain't doing the research) they'd smirk at ya and kick sand on you or throw used oil on ya :-)

It has been a while since I have posted on the site. You guys have been giving some really good advice. It is good to see that this community is tight.
I finally bought a set of adjustable highway pegs. It took some time for me to get the right peg just right. I ended up going to the dealer yesterday to get some help. The tech looked at the left one and made one adjustment to the right one a it was perfect. Rode out of the parking lot and made a 80 mile ride to Gettysburg Pa. Ahh, how nice it is to finally stretch out. I had to remind myself that I do live outside of D.C. Don't want to mess with country roads at night.
No more pinching of the seat. What a relief.
Weather is still nice around these parts. Going to hook up a charity ride for the Combined Federal Campaign with 40 coworkers to Gettysburg on Oct. 8th. I will keep you guys posted.
Until the next post, Ride hard/Ride Safe.

Grippy,
I'm pretty sure I got that right. It goes way back to the wild west days. But I agree that most people call them Quote: Chapps .
But I'm wondering about the experience that you reference.
Are you mentioning this from personal experience?
Inquiring minds want to know...

Oops, I wanted to put quote marks around the word "chapps".
Guess I screwed that up eh? ( little Canadian lingo there)
Then I didn't click to add my signature.

No I just know some things and that's one of them. :-)
If you'da asked for shapps in the old west they'da called ya a city boy.
And to answer your forthcoming question...I'm not that old.
