RE: Miles per year?

When i lived in Tucson i rode everyday and had a few different choices of rides. I liked my yamaha enduro because i could be cruzin along and then decide i wanted to on a nature ride. no prob. Houston is very humid and rains alot. I still get alot of riding time. I love to ride, my wife would probably ride with me more but my passenger seat sucks and i can't afford to buy a better one. We're going to get a larger bike with a better stock seat when i pay off my vstar in a year so we'll probably get more long range rides done. I'll look at that net sight lonestarrider.net. I hear west texas is a hell of a nice ride. well i'll talk at ya'all later.. hawg gone for now.....

RE: Got a taste of some cold weather riding....

1st off forget the mink oil on the gloves during winter, it just hardens and doesn't make any difference on the cold fingers. I looked into electric gear and man what an investment. Therefore i am back to low tech, Ride Slow2004 has the right idea. I wear long johns and extra inserts under my leathers. My fingers still get really cold though, also my toes suffer. I bought some ski gloves but they flunked the test, the ski head cover did pass though. I tried some glove insulators but they didn't work. I'm going to try some mittens over my gloves and see what happens. Meanwhile it's dropped below 30 degrees here for several days, so i'm in my truck for a little bit. Hawg gone.....

RE: Tires

When you do your research you'll find that a few of the tire makers are making tires with dual treds (hard in the middle for high mileage and soft on the sides for cornering. Also if you find a tire with a deep tread it will usually last longer. I guess i'm lucky or something because my 650 gets at least 12k to 14k out of a rear tire and 25k+ for a front tire. I've stopped buying from stealers, I also take my tire/wheels to the stealer not the whole bike. Doing this they only charge me half the labor. That's all for now.. Hawg gone.

RE: Got a taste of some cold weather riding....

There is this one spot on hwy 90 just outside of rosenberg almost to spur 10. seems there's a nest there the them dammed things don't like my pipes. I'm gonna put some mink oil on my gloves to see if that keeps out some of the cold. can't really afford the electrik heat at the moment.

RE: Got a taste of some cold weather riding....

Yes they do, I wear fingerless in the summer and have had them little honey makers just fly right in and sting the******out of me. I also get some other flying stinging bugz hit me in my lip, mid forehead and such. Man you talk about watering eyes i almost had to pull over. Kinda felt like putting a lit match to the spot where it stung me. Well i'll check back later for more winter glove suggestions. Hawg out......

Pipes

What kind of pipes do you run?.. I have a set of 2 and 3/4 inch HardKrome pipes. They're loud ( deafenning on long rides ) I like the deep sound and rumble i get from them. I only have one complaint about them, they get rust spots. I have the original pipes hanging on my fence and they have been there for three years now. They don't have as much rust as these Hardkromes that are about 3 years old.. I don't know about ya'all but pipes ainte cheep. I just expected a higher quality of chrome from the aftermarket. I'm going to change the straight through baffles to some quieter ones just to save my hearing a little, i don't like wearing ear plugz on long rides. Hey ya'all give me some feed back on this subject. I know everyones got their own style and preferences when it comes to our scooters. I'll check back later..... Hawg out..... Later Ya'all.....:@

Tires

I have a question, What type of tire do ya'all prefer? A long lasting tire or a not so long lasting tire? Let me explain. I have worn out a stock tire, which was o.k. but was gone in about 11k miles and didn't handle the grooves in the road very well. I have also worn out two long lasting tires that handled great but when it came to stopping on wet roads were somewhat scary. I now have a knew tire that seems to have a better grip of things and handles the grooves in the road very well also the wet stops are not a "oh,crap" scary. The stock tire was a Bridgestone extera, not impressive The high mileage tire was the Michellin m880 The last and newest tire is Bridgestone spitfire. I go for deep treaded tire for the mileage and good rubber for stopping. The first tires i bought i did for mileage only, they have deep grooves and hard rubber. this last tire has a harder center and softer sides and some deep grooves ( i hope they last ) I also go with the prices. m880's are affordable. We all know that shopping around is the key to a good deal i got spitfire tire for 75.00 off the internet. The stealer wanted 150.00 for the exact same tire. Well i'm getting ready for some Christmas dinner. Let me know your oppinions. Hawgs out and gone.... later ya'all......

RE: Miles per year?

I have an update, I just hit 50k on my 2006 v-star still mosly work related but i have had a few pleasurable rides to san antonio and austin. Although the one to austin i should have had a boat ( it rained all three days to and from ). so far i have replaced the armeture and the monoshock and several rear tires and a front tire. other then that it's been a perfect ride. I do think it's time for a tune up. I did put some E3 spark plugz but didn't notice any differance in milage or performance. Sorry it took so long to get back with ya'all but i've been a little busy. Drop ya'all a flag later.... Hawg gone...........

RE: Got a taste of some cold weather riding....

I agree the gauntlets don't do much but they do keep out the wind. I was thinkin' that maybe if i treet them with some mink oil or maybe some water proofing stuff they might seal a little better and therefore not let the cold through so easily. Also the mitten idea sounds good. I'll look for a set of very cold weather ones and see what happens. I'm not sure if i need heated gloves, those are expensive. Thanks for the great ideas, if ya'all think of anything else drop me a line. Turn key to on.... hit starter button... and vrrroooom yack at ya'all laterrrrrr........ Hawg gone........:C

RE: Wearing a helmet: What are your thoughts?

98% of the time i wear a skid lid but sometimes i get to where i don't want the hinderances of a lid so I go without. It's a personal choice, the brain bucket isn't going to always save your life, sometimes it will. It's all in the way you ride and the other guy that's not paying attention to you. What ever makes you happy... never drink/drug and ride .. ya'all ride on. Hawg gone...

RE: Got a taste of some cold weather riding....

I have a question, I purchased a set of "gauntlets" for winter riding and they are not as good as i thought they would be. My dear skin gloves do just as well as far as keeping my fingers from frosting over. I was told to check with the Bike units of a Police department. They say they have all the lowdowns on how to make these gauntlets weather proof and warm. Any ideas from our loyal readers? Drop me a line cuz the temps are droppin'.... Roll on ya'all.... Hawg out.
