RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Hey, all.
REALLY great to see so many of us posting here again.
Maybe this site will survive after all.
BTW: Headed to Johnstown, PA again this year for the Thunder In The Valley rally the end of June.
This is a SUPER event - they treat their guests like gold.
If anyone else is gonna be there, let's hook up for a root beer.

RE: Gumby Claus

OK, it's that time of year again - the time when I do my annual disclaimer. To wit: "Any e-mail and or post here or ANYWHERE ELSE, containing the term X-mas, will be immediately deposited in the trash - UNREAD". The upcoming holiday is Christmas - it's named that for a reason. I also don't appreciate - nor do I buy during the Christmas season at - any stores that sell EVERYTHING as X-Mas this and X-Mas that. When a store or restaurant employee wishes me "Happy Holiday", I always ask them if they've been instructed to NOT say Merry Christmas. So far, no one has admitted to being told that. Oh, and they can shove their "Holiday Tree" where the sun don't shine.

RE: HD, Made in China?

Pretty sure the "Starthings" being referred to are "TORX" screws/bolts.
At first glance, they can appear to be Allen-Head, but not so.
Although, in an emergency, every now and then you MAY find a particular size Allen wrench will fit a particular size Torx head.
But of course, we all know that would only ever happen if you were at home, in your garage, and had a full set of both Allen & Torx.
If you're out on the road - Murphy's Law applies.
Oh, and then there are the ones known as "tamper-proof" Torx head.
But we'll save that for another time.

Maybe that grand HE spent is why the Motor Company doesn't do it?

RE: HD, Made in China?

On my '78 Superglide, I know the forks and shocks were Showa - MADE IN JAPAN. The tach and speedometer said MADE IN ITALY, but I don't know by who.
My Road King forks and shocks are Showa, but I've changed the rear shocks to Progressive.
I once owned a '77 Chevy 4x4 pickup. It came from the factory with automatic front hubs. In order to try and steal some gas mileage, I bought and installed a set of Warn hubs I could lock in or out.
I don't remember exactly what I had to change inside the transfer case, but it required removing one or more of the back covers.
Seemed like every other bolt was a mix of either metric or American.
I made a living as a mechanic for several years, and I can still look at an AMERICAN nut ot bolt and know EXACTLY what size wrench I need. Metrics drive me crazy.
In 1974, I was working part time trying to help a friend get his SERVICE station up and running.
One day, and old friend I hadn't seen since 1963 stopped in for gas, with Michigan plates on his car.
Turns out he was now a stylist at GM.
We talked for a while and I brought up the subject of GM's push for the U.S. to go metric, and I couldn't understand why.
He summed it up in a nutshell: "Metric fasteners are all made overseas, and would have to be imported. GM can still buy imported metric fasteners cheaper than they can buy American".
It sucked then - and it sucks now.

RE: HD, Made in China?

Yeah, I have a problem with it too. Just like I have a problem with ANYTHING not built in this country by a company that's incorporated in this country. That leaves out ALL the Jap and Koean car and motorcycle manufacturers.
I guess all we can hope for is, that all the Chinese made parts at least meet the Motor Company's minimum specs, and that our Scoots aren't going to turn to sawdust as we're riding down the road.
Not sure about anyone else on here, but I'm old enough to remember when this was AMERICA.
And I'm saddened, embarrassed and ashamed at what our so-called leaders have done to it.
NO, I'm NOT ashamed of our country - just what's been allowed to happen to it.
I was born and raised in a MAJOR steel making town in western Pennsylvania.
Today, what's left of the mills is being dismantled for its scrap value - and will probably reappear in this country as a fleet of foreign made cars and bikes.
Ironically, there was a time when the mill REFUSED to let an import in one of its employee parking lots.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Really?
Apes!
I know, it's an age-old debate that will never be resolved, but I just don't see how Ape Hangers can be comfortable or afford proper control of the scoot.
And no - I've never tried them - and don't want to.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

So, my stock RKC seat, yeah the stock one, has 47k on it and is tearing at the seams. I got a seat off of a road glide but the nose is too long, and it moves me too far forward. It does feel nice though. A tad softer than what I'm used to.
So readjust your mirrors and quityergripen. :C

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Hey, all..................
Haven't been posting because I just assumed the forum had gone away with the mag.
So much for assuming.
Read the posts about squeeking Lyndalls.
Mine have been on the Road King for about 2 years and NEVER had a squeek outa them.
Clean, quiet and GREAT stopping power.
Love 'em.
BTW: For those of you with squeeking issues, try spraying em down good with BRAKE CLEANER every now and then just before you wash the bike.
The nasty chit gets stuck in the pads and causes the squeek - BRAKE CLEANER washes it out.
HOWZIT - was just up in your neck-o-the-woods recently.
Bought my lady an '06 DeLuxe from a private owner out near NAS.
Same color as my Road King - chrome with black trim.
We're in Wilmington, NC right now - headed home on Sat.
I'll wave as I pass through Jax.
